*sigh*

Science is the new witchcraft.

Since North American governments don't seem to want to promote science anymore many people are starting up their own chemistry and Biochemistry labs.

...then the police arrest you for no reason.

http://io9.com/5119166/teen-with-home-chemistry-lab-arrested-for-meth-bombs#c

It's a friggen' shame.

We all know who the wackos are. They are the ignorant white trash bombmakers who support the conservative movement in the US. The police don't arrest them. They would rather arrest innocent people.

Gammy Git Status Confirmed (at least when it comes to Video Games)

So I went to my local Grocery Store the other day and I found they were selling old video games again!

I managed to pick a number of N64 and PS1 games.

Some of the notable titles:

Castlevania SotN

Final Fantasy Tactics

Darkstalkers 3

The price? $2 per game.

Sweet deal.

I hate people.

Somehow people are paying $50 on how to make money. For a program over the Internet...And they are dumb enough to try to use the libraries computer to access it.

Shit. I mean how stupid are people?

The only people who are making money off this deal is the people getting paid $50.

There is no end to the freaking stupidity.

How the hell could anyone reasonable think this is a good idea?

Why the hell don't these people have internet access at home? If they have the $50 to waste on some scheme online how the hell could they not have money to buy their own computer?

It's such a shame the idiot librarian before me took off the timing software off their computers so they can stay on there as long as possible.

So now they have been on that computer for like 4 hours trying to get that thing to work.

Why the hell did the other librarian let them do this? There is no way this was a good idea.

Is this some sort of single access thing? For $50 you should be able to access the information more than once for shits sake. What kind of idiot pays $50 for a single access internet resource????

Excellent articnle about how Survival horror is gone.

http://www.destructoid.com/how-survival-horror-evolved-itself-into-extinction-114022.phtml

It's really true. RE 4 was an action game.

I dunno. It seems like there really isn't going to be a resurgence of survival horror games in the near future. We live in an age of regenerating life bars and autosave checkpoints. In the comments people were saying that Dead Space is a survival horror game.

Maybe in the future gamers will want a different game experience that emulates the old survival horror style.

New video from the Lonely Island Boys.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous.

The only reason why people watch Saturday Night live is for the digital shorts that these guys write and shoot.

These guys should have their own show.

They do some of the stupidest funny skits EVER.

Their writing is great and they always shoot stuff that is technically sound.

Black Friday Best Buy Ad Misprint. (Or how I landed Comand and Conquer 3 plus expansion for $9.99)

There was a misprint in the Best Buy flyer that had Command and Conquer 3 Plus expansion for $9.99 instead of the Command and Conquer collection.

So I saved $30 when I bought it. Pretty sweet.

I also bought Bioshock and that means I gotta haul in my Computer to work on Mon to register it online.

BlargH!

OK the MightyGodKing blog is pretty good.

He had had some sweet features.

Consider this three part run of book covers.

I love independent animation.

Not funny unless you saw the original Akira and understand why an American remake is a horrible, horrible idea. Just let some people make some original material!!!!

Solo Gamer in a multiplayer world.

This article hit on a few things that I was trying to explain to another gamer the other day.

It's tough to explain. Let me make a comparison.

I remember reading a Sci-Fi short story during middle school were kids from the future find an ancient relic called a "book". They don't understand it. It only reads one way and when you are done reading it still has the same words on the pages. They were used to computer monitors and the constant flow of information. So they figured people must have thrown the books away after reading them.

They didn't understand the value of the book or the act of reading. To read a good book and then be able to read it again in the future is something awesome.

It's sort of the same situation with newer gamers who do not appreciate single player games. Some good games, like a good novel can be enjoyed again. And it's the solitary act of enjoying it that really makes the experience special.

Confession. I did read Twilight.

Yes.

And I have no excuse at all.

I am an Adult Services Librarian.

I have no business reading YA books about teenage girls and shiny vampires.

I am no longer taking Young Adult literature classes in graduate school.

*sigh*

But hey. Vampires. I was once told that I shouldn't be reading Anne Rice because they are "for girls". Well screw that. If there are vampires in it I am going to read it or watch it.

All in all the book started out pretty great and captured my attention but quickly became sappy and bland. I am sure most young adults would consider those parts to be terribly interesting but I did not. Then it picked up a bit with bloodshed and running away from psychotic killer vampires who probably just showed up to inform the readers what real badass vampires are all about.

In any case I was grudging entertained by the book. It is interesting to read it as a 27 year old with no more childish ideas about romance and other completely false ideals. I don't think it's going to negatively effect any young person reading it and in fact like the YA book Sweet Blood it might potentially warn them to be a bit suspicious of creepy strangers.

But of course there are always those that will become obsessed over the books and movie. But hey those people would have become obsessed over something, if not this.

It's a trashy romance book.

Hulu is pretty sweet.

If you are late to the party like me you might not have messed around with Hulu much.

Try it out.

Rather than mess around with insane network websites to watch episodes of missed shows I can simply go to Hulu, ignore a few very short commercials and watch it in full in excellent quality.

I dunno why some people don't seem to like it.

Thanksgiving. Cooking Mama KILLS.

PETA has got a new game up. Cooking Mama Kills.

http://www.peta.org/cooking-mama/index.asp?c=pcmgb08

I wonder why the heck PETA has got to take stabs at holidays?

Shouldn't they just be trying to make people cut down on their everyday intake of meat?

Then again they do have the unreasonable goal of stopping all meat consumption of a society of omnivores. (Our teeth do not support a fully vegetarian lifestyle.)

Blue States VS Red States.

It's amazing how much people down south bitch and moan about "liberal elitists" up north.

Somehow they blame ALL their major problems on the northern states and don't see the connection when they elect people like Bush into office.

I don't know how they can just lump everyone together. I am living proof that there are rural areas and backwoods up here. We are not all city folk.

Just because your states originally based your economy on slaves and cotton is no reason to give up.

Businessmen have TRIED to setup factories down south but nobody stepped up to work.

Shit half the people I graduated college with moved down south because it's so easy for a person with education to get a high paying job down there. I mean come on I could have gotten a job that pays 10 K more if I would have looked around more in the South Carolina area.

Focus on some education and bettering yourself a bit Red States. After we stop wasting billions of dollars on useless wars and start building up new technology in the US we will need people to rebuild on the ruins of old America.

Here is the best bit of Red State hating I found on the web.

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/sfo/80714812.html

"Dear Red States...

We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we're taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially
to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Elliot
Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their
children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our
resources in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most
of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and
condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,
Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88
percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say
that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved
in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy b*****ds believe you are people
with higher morals then we lefties.

By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt
weed they grow in Mexico.

Peace out,
Blue States"

World of Goo 90% piracy rate?

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/world-of-goo-has-90-piracy-rate/

Wow. That really sucks.

I am not afraid to change my position on issues like DRM if this is how bad it's getting.

This is a $20 game from an indy producer who lowered the DRM and copy protection in order to please the consumers.

Now the pirates have not just bite the hands that feeds they savaged a small company that just wanted to do the right thing.

Shame on you Torrent losers.

I am against DRM that won't allow gamers to play certain single player games without an internet connection or has a max install number. But this is INSANE.

There is a healthy middle ground here people!

Old PSAs

I generally don't go for Cracked articles but this one made me smile.

http://www.cracked.com/article_16767_6-most-unintentionally-hilarious-old-school-psas.html

I totally used a bit from the introduction of "Perversion for Profit" for my second skit comedy DVD.

The prelinger archive has a ton of PSAs like this and old movies like "Reefer Madness". The best part is that you can use the footage in any media project you want for free. Oh I spent many days in college looking over this material.

I have a CDI player.

That's right.

I managed to score a basic CDi 200 unit from ebay for just $39 with free shipping.

WOW.

I took pics but forgot to transfer them to my flash drive for upload.

The CD tray is very loose and actually slides out of the machine if turned on it's side but besides making a noise like a dying whitetail deer when sliding in and out it seems to work fine.

I tried out Tetris and it ran perfectly.

The CDi remote (which I assume is the original) is powered by 2 AA batteries and is pretty beefy. It's amazing responsive even when not pointed at the CDi. It's got a big clunky thumb stick that is different from any other controller I have ever used. On the main menu bootup screen it acts just like a mouse.

The machine itself seems like it's in excellent condition and it even came with the original manual.

All I need to do now is keep looking for discount software for the system!

Dreamcast games to play on Halloween.

Well I have been forced into the Halloween spirit this year as my place of work seems to require it.

The theme is "Batman" this year so I managed to grab a burlap sack from a local coffee shop and I am making into a "Scarecrow Mask" for Halloween. It's coming out quite nice.

Here are a few games to play during Halloween.

The new Beats of Rag Mod based on the Splatterhouse series.

I have not played it yet. I am assuming you go around and kill evil stuff in a messy manner (If they stay true to the source material that is...)

Here is the DCEmu article and the LavaLit article for future reference.

The original RE series is a no brainer when it comes to horror themed games.

RE Code Veronica was the first RE game to do away with 2D backgrounds and was the first RE game to debut on a non-Sony console.

I find that the Dreamcast controller is perfect for survival horror games and thus I enjoy playing this game on the Dreamcast rather than the PS2 or Gamecube.

Find a copy of this lovely gem and proceed to have a good time running away from zombies and biological freaks for awhile.

Bats are really annoying. Hold up your lighter to get rid of them. I played through this game once before I learned that trick.

Illbleed is like starring in a B-Horror movie.

Instead of running away from enemies the gameplay drives you to walk slowly through each level looking for traps and steak dinners to gorge yourself on.

It's fun to play a game that doesn't really take itself too seriously but still manages to be very creepy and bloody at times.

Also: Evil Undead Sonic.

And of course the ultimate Halloween party game.

"Suffer like G did?"
"No! Don't Come!"

We have all heard these lines before and we all love them.

You know what I really wanted to do an in depth article about why this game is so fun but come on.

Zombies with Chainsaws people...

...You can't get more Halloween than that.
Happy Halloween Everyone!

Blog.

Yeah. Not much going on.

General stuff going on at work. More and more people that have never used the library are using the library now that we have "hard economic times".

I am busy watching cats flushing the toilet and that really bothers me.

Lets see here.

This weekend I finally got Dino Crisis 2 again (I had to sell my original copy back in 2002.) I also picked up a good copy of Grandia.

I have been working out which is good.

I slept in by accident today and nobody would have found out about it. (I love my job)
But I did report myself and put in for comp- time to cover the loss.

There was a seminar about a telephone/monitor system for the deaf and I missed going. There was no overtime cash for it and my Friday and Saturday was busy. They did a news story on it and now someone wants us to get it... crap.

Free Game Alert: Iji

Wow.

This is perhaps the most promising freeware game I have seen since cave story.

People are calling this a 2D Deus Ex.

It is so cool looking. Like an updated Another World.

It's free. Try it!

Just a Gentle Reminder: Dux and Wind and Water Puzzle Battles!

For everyone who has been living without Internet access...(you know, like me). The rest of you might be sick of hearing about these games but come on!

Wind and Water. It's a fast paced puzzle game!
http://www.redspotgames.com/shop/

Dux.
It's an old school shooter!
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-17-71-4-74-1uf-49-en.html

This is a very exciting time for the Dreamcast scene. Possible success for these titles may help usher in a new wave of Dreamcast Independent releases from smaller companies.

Also bear in mind that similar games with limited releases became quite the collectors items once the original run ran dry. So yeah. If you are considering spending some cash on a "current gen" game maybe you should consider investing your cash in one of these instead. It's gonna cost you about the same amount of money.

(And don't forget they still have some copies of Last Hope left at Red Spot Games. I know I am gonna grab one!)

Free Game Alert: The Suffering.

I am going to post everytime I find a free game

Pulled from Kotaku.

http://kotaku.com/5066051/play-the-suffering-for-free-thanks-to-your-tax-dollars

A hefty download (over a gig) but it's a decent game.

http://files.filefront.com/The+Suffering+Sponsored+by+the+US+Air+Force/;11846564;/fileinfo.html

I have the PS2 version and the sequel. I finished the original (Always a sign of a decent game) and found it to be pretty damn fun.

It's your basic "Oh crap I am on a prison island and everything is going supernatural and demonic" type game. More action but a pretty good dose of horror and blood as well.

The story is OK and the enemy design is just fantastic!

The end of Retro Games from 2008 and on...

I like Retro PC games. I like getting them for cheap at various thrift stores, salvation army stores and pawn shops. It introduces me to franchises, game developers, genres and I generally just like playing old retro stuff.

I am used to buying old PC games and easily being about to run them on my computer.

But now there is a whole new crop of protected games out there that I simply cannot play.

Even if I happened to find a super cheap copy of Half Life 2 out there I can't install it because the single player game REQUIRES internet access to install.

I have no means of using the internet at home right now.

Even worse than that it seems like insane DRM methods are popping up.

A maximum number of installs? Really?

It doesn't effect a gamer like me now but it will when I am looking through garage sales a few years from now.

Now with console games it hasn't gotten that bad yet. A copy of a single player game for the PS3 will still work on the PS3 years from now.

But PC games seem to be getting worse.

Perhaps I am getting too upset at this. I mean I fool around getting old games to work on my new computer because the requirements have changed. Won't there be workarounds made in the future that will ensure I can still buy used games for cheap?

Well I shouldn't have to use hacks and fancy CD-rips to play a retro game I got through an honest transaction.

I first got a copy of Half Life by buying my brothers old copy. Then I ended up buying 2 different bundled collections of the same game from Retail stores.

I also bought a shitload of other Sierra games like FEAR and Timeshift because I loved Half Life so much.

Now if Half Life 2 would have not required Internet access for installing the single player game I would have ALREADY bought Episode 1, 2 and the Orange Pack.

And that loss of $130 to Sierra was caused by a simple internet requirement.

The only way I COULD play the single player game is to pirate it from a Warez site. I don't want to do that because I don't like risking computer viruses.

Can you imagine what a pain in the ass it is going to be to play Retro PC games from 2008 in the future with things like Maximum Installs and other insane DMR measures?

And Pirates will STILL copy the damn game.

Chicken Pizzaiola (Pizziola) is back at Subway. $5 footlong

This sandwich is pretty much the only reason to eat at subway. (Unless you are going to get a no-cheese 6-inch chicken on wheat with no mayo as a health conscious fast food choice)

For awhile you could order it off menu at some Subways but not all of them. Now it it's back for a limited time.

Note that that Chicken Pizziola sub shown here is not dressed correctly. You need to add tomatoes, onions, green peppers and black olives to get the maximum experience.

The drawback is that this sub is perhaps the worst sodium offender out there. I suppose you could cut down on the sodium by halving the cheese and pepperoni they put on it...Subway always puts too much cheese on their subs.

Now if Quiznos decided to add a similar sub in it's menu for $5.00 that would be something. You could even add mushrooms to it. They might try to go old school though and have bacon and salami on the sub.

Luckily I just joined a gym and swam for an hour yesterday (First time in like 5 years). So I can actually eat one of these sometime.

Holy crap. I can't believe I posted an entire article on a stupid sandwhich...How lame. I guess I should have had breakfast this morning. I am so hungry...

Now that I am working out again I need to eat three meals a day.

Sega Getting Into Portable Media Devices...

*sigh* I don't think it's gonna have that many games though...

It seems like it's just a crappy media player branded Sega.

It *might* be cool if Sega ported some decent games for it, or even made some new games.

This was actually the first fast food I have memory of eating.

Wow.

Future generations will say: "You killed the enviroment for THIS??!!?!??!?!"

(But honestly? It kept the cold side cold and the hot side hot. Back when Macdonald's actually used somewhat fresh ingredients it was pretty tasty. I made an oath not to go to Macdonald's about 2 years ago that I haven't broken yet due to their decline in quality. Independently owned restaurants all the way!)

Why did I bother editing this old footage of my new apartment?

This song has grown on me.

I dunno what it is. I just really like this song. It's by a French band called Justice. It's just like an squired taste. You don't really know what to think about it the first time you try it but let some time pass and listen to it again and you might fall in love with it.

It makes me want to go out and beat people up with a collapsible baton club.

And holy crap take a look at this video!

That's pretty nice.

They are still plugging away at that game...

Did you see the dreamcast shirt in there?

This game will be released for the Dreamcast!

Sea Otters holding hands.

It's probably just because in the wild they hold on to stuff to keep from floating away...

...but it's still two two otters holding hands.

Free games: Wing Commander Secret Ops

I don't remember what specific events led to me download and play this game but I remember that it seemed pretty damn cool to me.

The game was FREE and FUN. The whole experience was based on the Origin website set up for the game. You went there to download the game and then get a custom code in order to activate the game. You then had to download each of the episodes and read "emails" and watch video on the website to keep up with the story. If you did better in the game you got a different story.

The game itself was classic Wing Commander. Blasting aliens in space while taunting them. Your wing mates actually ejected if they got smacked down (which was nice). The controls worked nicely with a game pad + keyboard combo.

In any case due to the large fanbase of the wing commander games this game and all it's episodes are STILL available for free online!!!!

Download the games here.

Use a fanmade tool to get a passkey here.

Read the story before you begin each chapter here.

Learn how to run the game on a modern PC here. (basically you just have to run in in compatibility mode)

Included in the display is the Bible, "Huck Finn", the Harry Potter series, "Whale Talk" and "The Chocolate War".

It's amazing how many books are still banned and challenged in the US today.

Scary Go Round.

A interesting webcomic. It actually takes a bit to get into it (Like Sluggy) but after you get to know the characters and various plots going on it's much easier reading.

There are various plots that include witches, vampires, the devil, thrift store shopping and much more!

Give it a shot!

I mean come one there was a whole story about THRIFT STORE SHOPPING!

Five reasons the Depression is gonna be fun!

http://gawker.com/5054879/5-reasons-this-depression-really-is-going-to-be-fun

The depression is gonna hit Canada lightly compared to the USA. I am glad I live so near Canada. The Canadians are coming over the border in droves to spend their money here. When I was doing local news for Watertown I heard how Canadians would wear crappy clothes on the ride to the US and then buy all new clothes here and discard their old stuff because they don't have to pay customs on the clothes they are wearing.

New video blog.

Wow. Youtube SUCKS. I dunno when this happened but the total length of video that can be put up is 10 lousy minutes. That really sucks for people that wanted a space to host a real media project and not some bullshit viral video. (The ones with cats in them are OK).

Of course most people don't want to hear me drone on for 20 minutes but still.

Wow. Job seekers are ignorant and arrogant

It's amazing how the economy has produced some real jerks.

I had a guy who came up looking for resources on resumes. He was extremely rude to me. And when I mentioned the work source place near here (They basically help you create a resume and do all the work for you). He didn't want to do that because they "made him sign up and wait".

Wow. This is a full grown man in apparent good health and he can't wait around for a few minutes to help his job opportunities? It's not like the guy has a job to go to.

It's amazing how we have all these lazy impolite white trash people that complain when hardworking immigrants get jobs.

I think that the only problem that I have with Obama is that he will let these shiftless honkies have even more welfare benefits. As a gas station manager I have sold too much overpriced junk food to morbidly obese people paying with food stamps. I can't talk about other areas but the system is just not working in Northern NY state.

Giving more money to people like the arrogant jerk who scornfully insults all the resources the taxpayers give him to improve his lot in life doesn't make any sense.

And of course if you ask anyone to improve themselves then you are just being "elitist". Of course it's actually much worse to sit around and do nothing to help anyone else. The truly "elitist" are the ones who assume that people are the way they are because they cannot change (Because they must be inferior). I say people are ignorant and arrogant because nobody has tried to do anything about it. Everyone is shamed into silence about the horribly educated morons who surround them.

We don't need to give money to these poor people and we don't need to give it to the rich. We need to give it to the working middle class who are killing themselves carrying this country.

Wow. Slacker Uprising.

Damn.

www.slackeruprising.com

What's really amazing is a little midway through the movie you get to hear from Bush supporters from 2004.

WOW.

One person basically says that Bush prays to God for wisdom and thus has her vote.

Of course 4 years from now we have a devout Christian running for office in the form of Barack Obama. And the same people who voted for Bush because he was a Christian are now convinced that Obama is a Muslim. And of course a sizable portion of people won't vote for him because he looks black. News flash people. His white half is a hell of a lot more genetically pure than the average Southerner parentage. If you think you are white then you should get your genes checked and I am sure you will be surprised. It shouldn't matter what the hell your racial background is anyway. If you can make a good speech and are attempting to clean up the shit that the Bush administration left us by getting some money to the middle class you should get elected.

I don't understand how a pacifist leader like Jesus could possibly support an aggressive war like Iraq. Then again most people who are "Christians" never actually read the bible.

It's just so amazing how zealous yet misinformed the great majority of the population is.

I would happy if these people were voting for Bush for reasons centered in reality but it seems this is not the case.

The economy...wow...

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1843168,00.html?iid=digg_share

So now instead of socializing something that needs to be socialized (Medical care or education) we have have bailed out the rich. In a country where the bulk of the working class destroys their own health with too many work hours to pay back insane fees for education and medical care we have socialized the economy to pay for the greed of the rich.

I feel a bit bad for all those suckers that bought into the whole "buy a house get a 401K" thing. Now all their houses are repossessed and their savings are worthless.

How the hell could ANYONE think that our corporate overlords were ever going to give anything back to us?

Now me? I thought ahead and bought some decent education and got a job in one of the few fields where unions ensure that you are not going to get fired. Plus I got an apartment close enough to my workplace that I can walk to it.

I am still paying off my college loans but I am in much better shape than the saps who were convinced they could afford houses.

It's midnight!

If you see a German ghost at midnight don't get out of the carriage. It's generally not a good idea. I mean COME ON.

Midnight!

Sega commerical before TV lost it's testicles.

Yet another article about game difficulty.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3787/difficulty_is_difficult_designing_.php?print=1

Some good points.

This whole paragraph about Resident Evil pissed me off a bit.

"Resource stinginess. The Resident Evil series chose to limit ammo as difficulty levels ramped up. This results in extreme tension, helping to add to the horror, but also greater pressure on the player to be resourceful. Many skillful Professional Mode Resident Evil 4 players rely on sharp-shooting kneecaps to bring the enemy to its knees, then finish it off with the knife to get through the game on a minimal bullet-budget."

Yeah right. Resident Evil 4 was VERY generous with ammo even in higher levels of difficulty. The whole "knifing zombies" thing is a play mechanic that you HAD to do in other Resident Evil games to beat harder difficulty levels. In Resident Evil 4 it just made the action game a bit more interesting.

Besides real players like me just use the knife at close range to cause the enemies to flinch then kicked them. You don't need to expend ANY ammo to do that.

In any case I am glad so many places are talking about difficulty in games.

How modern Gaming has made gamers wimpy.

Yeah. I totally agree.

Well except for the whole "Quicksave" thing. I like Quicksave in most games. I hardly ever remember to use it but it's nice to use if you want to Quicksave right after a cut scene and a boss fight. It's just nice to have the option. I hate checkpoints in games.

"Not only are our skills being neutered, it's being done in a way which makes us think we're still at the top of our game. It's exactly like The Matrix. Exactly like The Matrix. Yes, a no-thumbed bonobo monkey can now feel a simulation of the sense of achievement we've enjoyed since the '80s, but just remember, as The Incredibles told us, when everyone's super, no-one will be."

http://www.gamesradar.com/f/how-modern-gaming-has-made-us-into-wimpy-gamers/a-2008091692920350041

Rechargeable health bars. Auto Aim. Enemies whose health doesn't reset when you did. It's all so lame.

It's a damn shame that people think they are "hardcore" because they can play games like Halo and WoW. ANYONE can be good at those games. ANYONE.

Meanwhile decent games like Godhand which are challenging get bad reviews.

It makes me want to play some Doom on Nightmare. Or some Painkiller.

You know there are still some good games out there.

Going to Burlington on Sat.

My car is screwed up. I am going to South Burlington Vermont on Sat to get it checked out at a dealership. I am hoping it's no too much of a problem.

In addition I am also going to a video game store that I found out about that sells old video games.

It's always such a pain to try to find a store that sells old games. The same chain store that sells old video games in one area won't sell them in another store.

The store that I am going to is technically a Hollywood video franchise which doesn't sell retro games anymore at any of their stores. This one apparently does. They have A LOT of old video games according to the guy on the phone.

It's a real pain. I basically did google and mapquest searches for places that sell video games and basically called this place up by pure luck.

In addition there are always stores around that sell video games that only the locals know of.

In any case I have a good feeling about this place and I will probably be in the mood for some video games after getting my car sorted out.

Men get worse health care in America. Duh.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/05/health/webmd/main4418804.shtml?source=RSSattr=HOME_4418804

It's really sad how true this is.

While specific health concerns for women are addressed in depth there is very little open dialog about health issues for the male gender.

Plus the whole "macho" attitude of young men in America leads them to be more at risk from violent death and suicide.

You can tell how deeply this attitude is instilled with the venomous crap that comes from young teens chatting on Xbox live.

It's a real shame. Males in America need to relax a lot.

Why all the hate towards harder games?

Here is a recent quote from Kotaku.

"The Behemoth’s last game - Alien Hominid - wasn’t fun. Looked good, but wasn’t fun. It was the gaming equivalent of taking your balls, resting them on a table, picking up a hammer then smashing them over and over and over until you sobbed yourself unconscious." (Wed Sep 3 2008 Luke Plunkett Kotaku)

Wow.

Now I just watched the King of Kong where people were talking about their love of old school games BECAUSE of the skill involved.

Nobody says that Contra was a bad game because it was hard...

I didn't play Alien Hominid, die in game and then throw my controller down like a freaking six year old and claimed that the game was bad. I got my ass handed to me and laughed and tried harder. And it felt good when I got into the flow of the game and learned all the patterns and got better at it. It's not like it took that long to learn.

It's too bad that there is such hatred for games like this. I really think that people are forgetting the point of games. I personally WANT challenge.

I WANT to play God Hand and get my ass kicked if I don't do the right move combos.

I DON'T want to play games like Halo with a rechargeable magic health bar. (One of the worst game mechanics ever introduced)

It's not just action games either. If you wandered to far in an older school RPG like Ultima 6 you would get your ass torn apart by gargoyles throwing chain lightning. Now most RPGs have you on a safe linear path that's not too hard.

The real shame in all of this is that if there continues to be such bad press about games like this we will have no decent games to look forward to in the future.

It's a good thing that there are so many good games to look back on and play with pride.

King of Kong. Awesome Movie. (Kinda stunk how they protrayed Billy as the bad guy)

King of Kong was a great documentary.

It was even more interesting to watch the DVD with commentary and understand the story behind the movie as well. It never started out as a movie just about the Donkey Kong record but that's what it boiled down to.

The people who made this film got stuck with the rest of the stories they were trying to tell and they were forced to go with the central story of Billy vs Steve at Donkey Kong. They really lucked out. The characters and all the back story that was involved really came together well.

It's too bad that they had to paint Billy as the "bad guy" to sell their film but I sort of sympathize with them. If they didn't do that then they wouldn't have gotten the project off the ground.

However, in the end my sympathy really lies with Billy since in real life he is such a stand up guy. Anyone who knows anything about making a film, media editing or story telling can tell that the producers used every trick in the book to make him look bad.

They were forced to in order to tell a story but it still sucks that Mitchell got a raw deal.

In the end I think most people realize who the video gamer of the century is though.

Long live Billy Mitchell.

New Old craze. Phantasmagoria Gabriel Knight 3

Phantasmagoria.

Wow. This game is on SEVEN CDs. I only have the first one. I was a bit disappointed about that since I assumed I had the whole game. Nope. Only the first CD.

Still it was an exciting little romp through the house collecting random items and dealing with asshole real estate agents.

The install was a bit insane because you have to skip all the testing or else XP would crash. But after that everything worked great! Amazing.

Overall it's a sweet game and I kinda want to finish it.

Tim Curry voice acts a Southerner in GK3. It's so weird. I haven't played the game much. It's a pain to install (I had to try twice) and for some reason the game was REALLY dark

Ben There Dan That.

What a friggen' great game.

http://www.zombie-cow.com/?page_id=17

I played through the entire game last night. Between the White Chamber, Yahtzee's games and this I have been on a huge Adventure gaming kick lately.

I really want to see how hard it would be to create my own game.

Wind and Water Puzzle Battles Interview

Interview with Yuan-Hsi Chiang: Developer of the World’s Next Dreamcast Game

"Well, it’s a nice console with a dedicated fanbase. When I was younger, I would be extremely grateful when a Super Famicom (SNES) title arrived very late in its life, as it felt more like a tribute than a big commercial project. Many Dreamcast users around the world are really excited about this release! And the market, especially in Japan, is big enough to make it very profitable, which doesn’t hurt one bit!

On a more techie side, the DC is very robust, and supports true 240p RGB, which provides the definite 2D arcade experience. The controller suits the game perfectly, and there are practically no load times. There is also VGA and Arcade Stick support, so you can truly play this game any way you want on DC!"

Via www.siliconera.com

I liked the interview a lot. The guys over at Yuan Works seem to really want to preserve the pixel art that makes retro games so great.

I also enjoying hearing that the Japanese market for Dreamcast games is still great enough to make making games profitable.

Phelps wins 11 Gold Medals.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/olympics/2008/08/12/200.fly.ap/?cnn=yes

That's pretty awesome.

His goggles malfunctioned which sucked. I remember swimming the 500 in high school and college and having your goggles mess up is really distracting.

It's too bad there wasn't a swimmer like this during my high school days. I beat (destroyed really) 4 individual records and 3 relay records. But I didn't get any respect at all from anyone. I really enjoyed swimming but it would have been nice to get some recognition of the sport.

Hopefully now that a swimmer holds the top position people will have greater respect for the sport.

It's really the only pure sport left.

-Note. Don't get started on the whole "new speedo suit" thing. That's BS. Do you know how much tech is involved with running shoes and other sports equipment? In other "sports" you have to use stuff that has been in heavy development for CENTURIES. Just because a suit *might* give you %2 less drag is no reason to disrespect a true champion.

Micheal Phelps destroying world records.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics/swimming/7555336.stm

Friggen' sweet.

I remember how excited I was during High School when I broke 2 minutes in the 200 freestyle.

I think I still have that record. I know my 500 freestyle record will never be broken. That record was like 13 years old when I destroyed it.

Playing the old classics on a newer PC is sometimes a pain.

I was trying to play Discworld (An Adventure point and click game based on the work of Terry Pratchett) on my new computer.

It's a friggen PAIN.

When I finally got the thing installed and working the voices were all screwed up. The music was fine but the voices were all messed up (a real blow since the voice acting was really funny in some spots)

Luckily I used a program called VDMSound which emulates the sound drivers of older PC games!

Now Discworld works perfectly! Sweet.

(and no I don't have the CDI version. I don't even have a CDI. That would be sweet though.)

Internet Trolls and the Ring of Gyges.

NY Times article about Trolls.

The Ring of Gyges

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Gyges

It's always going to be the same. If anyone has anonymity they will not act moral.

If you find a ring that makes you invisible you will eventually rape the queen and kill the king.

If you can make any kind of comment you want then you will.

Eventually it all turns ugly.

Now that I have Japanese PS2 games I can honestly say the Japanese box art is almost always better.

Kid from Nirvana Cover Wishes it was the 90s

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92833535&ft=1&f=1021

"These days, Elden says, his peers concentrate on "playing Rock Band on Xbox, like, that's not a real band! That's the difference between the '90s and kids nowadays; kids in the '90s would actually go out and make a [real] band!""

Yeah. The 90's were pretty kick ass.

Every time I try to tell someone that though they just focus on all the negative crap that went on there. Like pop music and shit. You know what? Pop music was bad back then but at least there wasn't a freaking INDUSTRY setup to promote underage Disney stars. Yeah we had one or two back in the 90's. But it wasn't as bad as today.

There was more cool music on the radio.

I think overall people have a lot more excuses about how they live their lives today.

Lego is pretty sweet.

Secret Pants Skit Comedy

Lotsa talented skit comedy folk out there.

It's too bad we have to watch reality shows on TV instead of decent comedy.

Ah well. Screw TV. There is nothing on anyways. I am glad I don't pay for cable.

High Tension - A great movie. A bit of a rip off?

High Tension was an AWESOME movie.

However, when I was watching the beginning I was struck how similar the first part was to Dean Koontz's book "Intensity".

Here are all the things that are the EXACTLY the same in the beginning of the movie and in the book.

-Two college friends, both female, are driving to one of their homes. One of them complains about the driving of the other.

-They meet the family.

-Later on during the night a large killer comes to the house and kills the family but not the female guest.

-The female somehow hitches a ride with the killer they go to a truck stop.

-The killer kills the truck stop employee (There were two in the book).

-The female sneaks into the stop and takes a gun. She then goes after the killer.

-The killer later approaches the females and the gun is useless because he has taken the bullets out.

Of course there are some major differences. In the movie the other female is not killed but kidnapped. In the book the killer already has another girl trapped in his house.

I mean I dunno. I suppose it's easy enough to come up with a movie script if the setup has already has been done before. The movie makes up for it by including a HUGE PLOT TWIST that I did not see coming. The twist really makes the movie and raises it above the normal horror movie genre. Kudos to the Producer for changing the ending and letting the movie run 20 minutes after the twist is reviled.

Makeup and special effects were great.

Acting was superb.

It's a really great DVD and I recommend watching it with the original French audio.

Beer fest! Burlington VT.

I am going to take some pics soon of all my new stuff I got at garage sales.

However, I had to work today because everyone called in sick. PLUS I went to Vermont this weekend to Beerfest!

Mirco Breweries!

So much awesome beer.

I drank Stout, ale, lager, red, wheat, Lots.

So awesome. There are so many kinds of beer with awesome names.

My personal favorite was a Gruit that had a real herbal/medicinal taste to it.

There was also a beer that had a French name from Quebec that was a rye beer with peppercorn in it. It was called Diablo something it was interesting.

There was cherry wheat beer at that booth that tasted so sweet and mild.

It was a pretty awesome day.

The only problem was the sun. It was so hot and there was not a lot of shade set up.

I was sweating so much I never had to take a restroom break.

I got a stone coast beer glass and you get to keep your sample glass.

Perhaps the best garage sale find EVER?

I got a Japanese PS2 with a cool logo on it along with 60 PS2 and PS Japanese Games. (Also 3 Japanese Saturn Games)

Pretty rare ones too.

Here are a few of the titles.

Wild Arms
Persona 1 -3 (and P3 FES)
Valkyrie Profile
ZenoGears
Tales of Legia (and a bunch of the "tales" games on the PS2)
Lunar Silver Star
Shadow of the Colossus
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
Shinobi
Devil May Cry
A bunch of Gundam games for the PS2
Final Fantasy X International (Which I can play in English)

A bunch of others that I cannot remember. Most of these are in MINT condition. Like NEVER been played.

All for $100.00!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean Final Fantasy International was a Japanese release that goes for $30 used.

So add that to the Japanese PS2 and I already have made out pretty good.

I hope I can sell some of the other games.

Oh and the carton also contained a WonderSwan.

You really shouldn't give Mice Cookies.

Would the vampires survive a nuclear holocaust?

I am betting yes. And with the Nuclear blast dust blocking out the Sun they would have a fun time taking care of the over-population problem.

Wow. Starcraft is still going.

What a great game. I should totally play some mods. It's too bad I can't play online anymore.

And I should include this game in the video game Tourney.

Man this got me riled up about RTS.

OK, you CAN make your foot go in circles clockwise if you concentrate hard enough.

Scary Stuff.

Interesting Internet Reading: Don't eat it Steve!

Steve eats 14 year old cereal, dog treats, Prison Toilet Wine, Mexican Corn Infection and Silkworm cocoons.

Here is a short exceprt from the last:

"Someone recently told me they don't eat peanut butter because the FDA permits it to legally contain a certain amount of insect parts. This person might not want to buy a can of Silkworm Pupas. The amount of bugs in here is downright wacky."

Steve Don't eat it!

Excellent reading. I really want to try my hand at wine making one day. One the neighbors near our camp made his own wine.

The 2008 Olympics are going to be damned joke.

There is a ton of messed up crap going on in this years Olympics.

I feel bad for all the athletes who trained so hard only to get gypped into going into a messed up country like China. I dunno who I dislike more. The Olympic committee that didn't take China's pollutions problems into consideration or the US corporations who have allowed China's ruling class to destroy their own country with pollution and ignorance.

So besides the obvious air pollution issues there is a bunch of messed up crap that going to possible ruin the games.

For some insane reason China won't allow countries to bring food for the athletes. This means that they will have to eat Chinese food which even by the lowest standards is sub-par.

A US caterer said this about the chicken "We had it tested and it was so full of steroids that we never could have given it to athletes. They all would have tested positive,"

It's a damn shame. Chinese protein sources are also full of insecticides and illegal veterinary medication. If you think the problems of Chinese goods shipped to the US are bad just consider what kind of shit they are serving to their own people. It's a lot worse than the stuff the US gets.

They are even having trouble getting enough ice for the competitors.

Such a shame for the athletes.

Kate Beaton explains why being an American is rad!

I found Sam and Max in my local Walmart!

Only in the small CD section. There were only 2 left on the shelf!

I think I only got episodes 1-3 which is kinda lame. I had hoped to get the entire season.

Ah well.

I got it yesterday and I really didn't take a look at it yet. I have heard you can buy the entire season one in a bigger box in some stores.

I also got the limited edition platinum version of "Prey" on clearance for $19.00. Yeah. A bit much. But it's a big metal box. I am a sucker for big metal boxes.

Discovery Channel ad turns into a meme

See more funny videos at CollegeHumor

Since 1951 the Wilhelm Scream is still going strong

If you have ever watched a movie you probably have heard it.

The Wilhelm Scream.

Read this list of games that use the scream and then take a look at the video which shows just some of the movies that have used this audio gem.

http://kezins.com/2008/06/weve-all-heard-it-the-wilhelm-scream-video-games/1736

Last "Wanted" Post.

Yeah so I saw the movie yesterday do to my lack of air conditioning.

It had NOTHING to do with the graphic novel.

The movie itself was rather cool and the very few scenes that were from the graphic novel were great.

Other than that it was a completely different story with different themes.

It's a nice looking movie and it has a lot of flash. It's like they wanted to do a real adaptation but then someone who was funding the movie decided to make sure that Marvel and DC couldn't sue so they changed the entire story.

The story is LAME. Lame, Lame, Lame. The whole plot involving how the guild of assassins chose their victims is beyond stupid. In the graphic novel the main character made friends despite being surrounded by traditionally evil people and he found out that there are certain layers to evil and he ended up battling the more chaotic "evil" people that just wanted to destroy the whole world for fun instead of ruling it behind the scenes. In the movie version he basically just kills everyone. For some reason ALL the assassins deserve to die and he kills them all. There are no layers of evil here. No lawful conquering evil VS self destructing chaotic evil. No real plot. Just a shoddy plot device that makes very little sense and pretty much goes against what made the graphic novel great. LAME

The acting was pretty good.

The action was superb. This was an action movie. Lots of gun porn. VINTAGE gun porn even.

All in all this movie is a great $2.50 rental. I wouldn't bother buying the DVD. Watch it in the theater only if you happen to have no air conditioning and are in the mood for some mindless action.

This movie shouldn't have been called "Wanted". It's a great shoot'em up action flick but had nothing of what made the comic so special.

They had all the money, stars, special effects and promotion to do a REAL adaptation of "Wanted".

This is not it.

The mainstream media chickened out again since we live in a litigious world where decisions are made solely on whether or not you *might* get sued.

Saturday, June 28, 2008

A note about my last rant. (Wanted)

I don't want to contribute to Internet hate. I really don't.

I have not seen "Wanted" yet and maybe it will turn out to be good movie.

Also, I want to stress that I am not looking for a frame by frame adaptation of the graphic novel.

However, I also want to try to express my disappointment about the HUGE changes made in the plot.

The WHOLE PLOT of the graphic novel revolved around villains in a super hero universe banding together to beat all the heroes and take over the planet. I loved this plot because I always connected to the villains in comic books and graphic novels rather than the heroes. The graphic novel was the sort of thing I would create in my imagination when I was 12 after reading a comic book. (If only the villain had done this or worked together with this villian he could have gotten away scot free)

If you take away the superhero universe because of potential legal problems then you take away what makes the graphic novel special. You take away what made the story special.

So yeah, I suppose printed media is your best shot if you want a real story.

So go read the graphic novel "Wanted".

I dunno if the movie is going to be any good.

Once again copywritten ideas ruin a good movie (WANTED)

Such a damn shame.

"Millar: I was when I saw an early draft of the script, before Timur came on board. The super-powers were removed and the whole thing was a very straight crime story. The producers felt we could have legal problems with the super-villain stuff in the book as so much was analogous of Marvel and DC characters and history, but Timur came up with an interesting way of giving the killers powers again. Once he was onboard I knew the property was safe. He just absolutely got it and kept about 70% of the book. There's a lot of new stuff he came up with for the middle act, but the first hour and the last half hour is the same as the book for the most part. And the changes make it better."

So basically that means they couldn't make a REAL film adaptation of "Wanted" because it *MIGHT* piss off Marvel and DC. A bunch of Hollywood execs didn't have enough balls to do the real movie and paid the original creators enough money to bastardize their creation. It's getting to be that print media is just about the only truly free medium left.

The whole friggen point of the comic was that the super villains win. Without the comic book style heroes and villains there is actually not that much of an awesome factor.

I will probably go see the movie. I just don't know if it's going to come close to how good the comic was.

It just sucks. Half the people in Hollywood should grow a freaking backbone and do something without worrying about the repercussions all the time. The other half needs to stop being paid off and make their decisions based on making quality media and not money.

Wow. I suppose there are attractive women where I live now.

A nice looking young woman just asked me a reference question. Picture Christina Ricci with short brown hair.

Wow.

Must retain aloft professional librarian status...

The Strange Way MY Life Works.

1. Watched a trailer for "Wanted" on TV. Angela J looks nice and tattooed up. But then I get pissed off when I realize that they dropped the whole "planet full of super villains with no super heroes" theme. They replaced the awesome original plot with some lame "guild of assassins" thing. No mention of super villains. I was disappointed. It does get me thinking about the original comic and how I need to score a copy of it.

2. Take Steel Head Trout and two sliced of bread to work. Forget to take any dressing.

3. Look in fridge and see a container of Washbi mayo.

4. Remember in the graphic Novel of "Wanted" the main character orders a fish sandwich with Wasabi Mayo. (I think it was salmon).

5. Made my trout sandwich with Wasabi Mayo.

6. One of the best fish sandwich's I ever ate...Awesome.

So in retrospect Wasabi Mayo IS really good on fish sandwiches and I would had never tried it if I didn't happen to see that trailer.

Boring? Yes well I didn't get much sleep last night.
